“Understanding, Justifying and Implementing an ERP System”


The “Understanding, Justifying and Implementing an ERP System” course presents the training material from the “Introduction to ERP” course developed by APICS, the Association for Operations Management, in webinar format.  Sponsored by brij Image & Information, Inc., and led by an APICS instructor, Tim Lyons, CFPIM, the course uses lecture, exercises and a case study to provide a foundation for selection and implementation of ERP software within an organization.  Participants will learn how to develop a business case for an ERP implementation, manage business process and organizational changes during implementation, and properly structure an ERP implementation.

While the “Introduction to ERP” APICS course has been available for years, the people that need it most are usually key company individuals identified to participate in an ERP software selection and/or implementation process.  These individuals already bear significant responsibility within a company and are the least likely to have large blocks of time available to travel to a classroom based course.  To address this need, the course has been adapted to a series of shorter sessions delivered over the Web.  Students can attend sessions and interact with the instructor live over the Internet or they can view sessions that have been recorded.  The course also includes personal mentoring sessions to help students adapt the lessons they learn to their own specific organizations.

Course Outline:

Session 1:  Introduction to Enterprise Resources Planning


        • Describe the concept of ERP
        • Define key terms as they relate to ERP
        • Describe the basic ERP model
        • Identify the five different ERP maturity levels
        • Understand the transition from MRP to ERP
        • State the benefits of ERP
        • State the pitfalls of ERP implementations


Session 2:  Developing an ERP Business Case

        • Quantify the need for change
        • Identify and quantify benefits
        • Identify initial acquisition and installation costs
        • Recognize on-going costs
        • Calculate the return on investment (ROI) for an ERP system
        • Write a business case to justify an ERP implementation


Session 3:  Business Process Redesign

        • Align strategic goals, people, knowledge processes, and internal systems
        • Define the concept of a process

Session 4: The Value Chain Process

        • Describe the basic elements that comprise a company’s value chain

Session 5: Technology and International Considerations in Implementing ERP

Tim Lyons, CFPIM

Tim has been involved with ERP since the days of MRP, beginning with a career in manufacturing using MRP in the 1970s.  Advancing through positions in production control, master scheduling, materials management, and project management, Tim leveraged the growing power of MRP II systems through the 1980s.  In the late 1980s, he served as the project manager for an ERP implementation at his company and led the expansion of ERP functional usage at other companies in subsequent years.  Since the early 1990s, Tim has worked in the ERP software industry, in field consulting, training, and sales roles.  He is currently a senior solution consultant with brij, an Oracle/JD Edwards value-added reseller.

Tim has been an active APICS member since the mid-1970s and is certified at the Fellow level in Production and Inventory Management.  He has taught various APICS courses, including certification review classes, for more than 25 years.
